In Kuleaen, a rural community in northern Cambodia, 95% of the most vulnerable families still lack access to clean water. Here, children don't just walk for water - they climb for it. Each day, they make the steep 3-kilometre trek up the mountains, often more than once, to collect dirty water from ponds and shallow streams. Clean water is scarce everywhere. Nearly half of the schools in Kuleaen have no safe drinking water at all.

Reduced water table levels have led to water contamination and saline intrusion. The lack of functional potable water supply in schools where students have to get water from deep well or rainwater also impacts the well-being of children in school.

Some water sources are also contaminated with limestone. Poor waste collection and treatment also results in the waste being dumped in ravines and washed into streams. The water storage containers in households are mainly old, unhygienic plastic buckets and basins. World Vision seeks to construct safe and reliable water systems with filtration in schools.
