The lack of sewage systems and widespread open defecation make things worse - waterborne diseases are a daily threat, putting lives, especially young ones, at constant risk.

In Kuleaen, a rural community in northern Cambodia, 95% of the most vulnerable families still lack access to clean water. Here, children don't just walk for water - they climb for it. Each day, they make the steep 3-kilometre trek up the mountains, often more than once, to collect dirty water from ponds and shallow streams. Clean water is scarce everywhere. Nearly half of the schools in Kuleaen have no safe drinking water at all.
